Old boards shrink over time. The gaps between them look rough, collect dust, let cold air through in winter, and make the floor feel unfinished no matter how good the polish is. Filling them before the sand makes a massive difference.
I use flexible, colour-matched filler that moves with the timber as it expands and contracts through the seasons. It goes in before the final sand so the surface comes up smooth and seamless — no ridges, no colour mismatch.
Not every gap needs filling. Some old floors look better with a bit of character left in. I'll have a look and tell you straight which gaps are worth doing and which ones to leave alone.
