A look at four recent floor sanding projects across Lake Macquarie. Every job done by Wayno, start to finish, with eco-friendly Bona finishes.
The brief: A 1970s family home with original blackbutt floorboards hidden under carpet for 30 years. The boards had surface staining, minor cupping, and old carpet tack holes throughout.
The work: Full machine sand through three grits, gap filling with matching timber dust resin, two coats of Bona Traffic HD satin finish. Board replacement in the hallway where termite damage had taken hold.
The result: The blackbutt grain came up beautifully — rich golden tones with the natural colour variation that makes this species so popular. The owner said it was like getting a new house.

The brief: A lakeside home with spotted gum floors that had been coated in a dark oil-based polyurethane in the 1990s. The finish was peeling, yellowed, and hiding the natural beauty of the timber.
The work: Heavy initial sand to remove the old poly buildup, followed by progressive finer grits. Bona primer to even out the tannin, then two coats of Bona Traffic HD in matte for that natural, low-sheen look the owners wanted.
The result: The spotted gum's signature interlocked grain and colour range — from light browns to deep chocolate — came back to life. A completely different room.

The brief: A character home in Adamstown with original parquetry flooring in the lounge and dining rooms. Several blocks had lifted, the existing finish was worn through to bare timber in high-traffic zones, and there were water stains near the kitchen entry.
The work: Re-glued and clamped the lifted parquetry blocks, replaced six damaged blocks with matching timber sourced from a salvage yard. Full sand, Bona primer, and two coats of Bona Traffic HD satin. The geometric pattern was carefully sanded to keep the block edges crisp.
The result: The parquetry pattern looked stunning once the old finish was removed. The owners had been considering ripping it out for new flooring — now it is the feature of the home.

The brief: A renovation project in Warners Bay where the owners had removed walls, combined rooms, and needed the entire ground floor sanded and finished as a single, seamless surface. Mix of old tallowwood and new tallowwood boards that needed to blend together.
The work: Levelled the transition points between old and new sections, machine sanded the full area, filled all gaps with matching resin, and applied Bona Natural primer plus two coats of Bona Traffic HD satin. Special attention to blending the colour of the new boards with the aged timber.
The result: You cannot tell where the old floor ends and the new boards begin. The tallowwood's warm honey tones unified the entire open-plan living space.
