Bona Traffic HD vs Mega ONE — Which Floor Finish Is Right for You?

As a Bona certified applicator, I get asked this question almost every week. Both are excellent finishes, but they serve different purposes. Let me break it down plainly.

Bona Traffic HD

This is the commercial-grade option. Traffic HD is a two-component waterborne polyurethane that cures to an extremely hard surface. I recommend it for high-traffic areas -- hallways, kitchens, living rooms, and any home with dogs or young kids.

The hardener activates a chemical cross-linking process that creates a finish tougher than standard polyurethane. It resists scratches, scuffs, and chemical spills better than anything else I have used in 15 years of floor sanding.

Drying time is reasonable. You can walk on it in socks after about four hours. Full cure takes five to seven days, during which you need to be careful with furniture and rugs.

Bona Mega ONE

Mega ONE is a single-component finish. That means no mixing, no hardener, and a slightly lower price point. It is a quality product and more than adequate for bedrooms, spare rooms, and homes without heavy foot traffic.

The finish is clear and non-yellowing. It dries quickly and has very low odour, which matters if you are living in the house during the work. For rental properties or homes where budget is a concern, Mega ONE delivers good value.

The Practical Differences

Durability is the main gap. Traffic HD will last eight to twelve years in a busy household before needing a maintenance recoat. Mega ONE typically needs attention after five to eight years, depending on traffic.

Cost-wise, Traffic HD adds roughly 15 to 20 percent to the finishing stage of a job. On a typical three-bedroom home, that translates to a few hundred dollars more. For most families, I think it is worth it.

My Recommendation

For main living areas, go with Traffic HD. The extra cost pays for itself in longevity. For bedrooms and low-traffic spaces, Mega ONE is perfectly fine. Some clients use Traffic HD throughout for consistency, and I understand that approach too.

Both finishes are water-based, low VOC, and environmentally responsible. They dry clear and will not amber your timber the way oil-based products do. That is especially important on lighter species like blackbutt and tallowwood, which are common in Charlestown and surrounding suburbs.
